WELCOME

To the beginning of the new season. We hope you will enjoy coming to Uphall Community Centre each month, and that you will also join at least one of the groups. Newcomers-will be interested to know that the annual fee is only £15, and that covers all the groups. If any extra charge is made it will be because a group has become larger and they have decided to hire a hall. This is unlikely however as in all probability the groups will decide to start up more groups. The idea is that we meet in each other's homes for our activities. It is more friendly, and you get to more people.

The exception to this at the moment is the Computer group, who meet at Craigshill in Livingston, in the community part of the Library at the Mall there. It has until now been on a Wednesday afternoon but there is a slight inclination to change the day and time. This will be discussed at today's meeting. This is free, as the Centre allows us to use their computers and are very generous in their help. They are extremely friendly and always on hand should we need advice. The group is for all levels of computing, hopefully everyone will help each other. Already I have picked up a few tips from other members. It is good to discuss your computer problems too, or lack of knowledge, no matter how well versed we are in computers there is always more to learn. Complete beginners are attending this group to with a view to learn 'how to do it' before buying their own computer.
Interesting. Everyone should follow as far back as possible it is amazing what transpires.

GARDENING and HISTORY OF WOMEN IN BRITAIN, ITALIAN, OUTDOORS, PHOTOGRAPHY, these have only one or two names so far, but POETRY and MUSIC APPRECIATION are almost certain to start. Add your names to these lists now. PAINTING FOR PLEASURE has many names but we need someone to guide us along or preferably a tutor. THE ROMANS, TRAVELLING IN EUROPE, WALKING, WRITING are all suggestions for groups, and there are a number of names for Writing, could take that group, who would like to attend perhaps at midnight??!! You may put forward any subject that interests you, and who knows we may find that that is the very topic that everyone wants to follow.

NEXT MEETING OF U3A WEST LOTHIAN IS TUESDAY 19th AUGUST at 2pm
IN UPHALL COMMUNITY CENTRE

PUBLICITY: We are starting now to publicize our new West Lothian group, and so we ask you to help us, tell all your friends, discuss it at any group you attend, and generally invite people to come along to our next meeting. There was a bit in the West Lothian Courier in the Uphall section regarding the meeting today, so hopefully as a result of that there will be a few new faces here, in which case we say "We are very pleased to see you here, and hope you will continue to come, and also will find something of interest to you in our groups. We need at least 10 people on the committee and at the moment we have Connie Payne, Mary Clark, Pat Lawson, Margo Aitken, Margaret Copland and Kathleen Ross-Hale. Our web master is lan Millward, who is doing an excellent job there. So that makes 7 in all, so the minimum we would need for the committee is another three, more if possible.

NEXT MEETING: We are being presented with our certificate, and following on from the will be a monologue from Ann Montgomery. Any of you who have heard Ann before will know that she is a very talented lady, writes excellent poetry and can hold your attention for hours. A lot of her work is hilarious, and others are poignantly emotional. She may have her sidekick with her babbling on about photo albums or she may go it alone, but either way you are in for an excellent afternoon.

There are plans for starting other groups. Art Appreciation, Books/Reading, both are a distinct possibility, I might be the leader of these two groups if no one else comes along. So if you are interested approach me and we will arrange a time and date .

French Conversation is going very well and my have to split into two groups. Discussion Group meets Friday 2Sth August at l0 am and has the interesting title of 'HELL IS OTHER PEOPLE'. Each member gets to choose the topic, so they are very interesting and varied discussions.

Armchair Travel could be interesting and already 4 names are down for this.

History-well there is one I would have thought would take off, I certainly would like to attend Family History but it would have to be around 3 am in the morning as that is the only free time I have, indeed it was 4am this morning when I went to bed, I just don't have time for the luxury of sleep. I might have slept a little longer this morning but I got a phone call to say my oldest son had been rushed into hospital. Following on the death of my aunt, who was more a mother to me than an aunt, the shock was too great. The police had wakened me at Sam on Thursday to tell me about my aunt, I'd spent the past two weeks going to her but she did not appear to be so ill. So now I am praying for my son. That particular son has already done a large family tree and I have copy of it, to which I refer regularly, it is so interesting

BOOKS: We have decided to raise funds by having a book sale at each monthly meeting. Some of the committee have brought along books for sale today, at a reasonable price, so please try to buy some, and then bring along at least one book each month to donate for our sale.

FUNDS: Being a new group we are very low on funds, hence the reason for the Book Sale, but we thought that would be fun for everyone too, especially as most of us like to read and the price of books is so high. So go to it, help the club out, and enjoy your reading.

SORRY: With my personal family problems I am rushing to do this newsletter half an hour before the meeting. So I am going to have to stop now. I promise you a bigger and better newsletter next month.
Take care, God Bless,

Kathleen
